Toronto-based artist Nardos Almaz’s debut single 18 Months, is a raw, emotionally layered song about the aftermath of a breakup and the weight of lingering memories.

Almaz began writing music in her childhood bedroom in Kitchener-Waterloo, and has spent the past few years quietly building a name for herself in Toronto’s independent music community. With opening sets for artists including Leith Ross, Rachel Bobbitt, and Haley Blais, she’s earned early attention for her emotionally vivid songwriting and dynamic live presence.

“18 Months is about the weight of lingering memories long after a breakup, and the desperation and confusion that comes with an unwilling end,” Almaz explains. “The verses were written soon after the split, depicting how jarring and devastating it was at first, while the choruses were written later on—hence their more lighthearted, yet still nostalgic tone.”

The song was written in January 2021 when Almaz was just 16 years old. It was recorded in early 2024 by producers Justice Der and Stephen Bennett, who also perform in her band.

“There were definitely times over the years when I wanted to scrap the song altogether,” she adds, “but Justice and Stephen always found ways to breathe new life into it, both live and in the studio.”
